Next to Lake Taupo, just a few minutes drive from Turangi, is a very easy walk through the woods. The walk is shaded nearly the whole way and the gentle breeze from the wake keeps you cool as you stroll around the winding path listening to bird calls and admiring the foliage.
There are no hills to climb and steep cliffs to tip-toe around. This is the kind of walk you can do in a sundress and flip-flops, although if it has recently rained you will come across a few mud puddles. The lake is right next to you, so you can here the waves crash, but you can’t see it through the trees. There are a few paths that allow beach access, so if you want to have a semi-private picnic on the lake this would make a decent spot – easy to access but not overcrowded with people.
The Orutua Walk is relatively short, maybe 15 or 20 minutes, but it ends at another walk to the beach which take another 10 – 15 minutes. The walk to the beach is mostly un-shaded, so if you burn easily plan ahead. I like that beach because it has lots of small smooth stones which make the water perfectly clear.
