The Mercure in downtown Auckland is a luxurious budget accommodation. For about $50 USD a night I wasn’t expecting much, but I was delightfully surprised by the clean, efficient room.
The room is a little small, but there is a small area by the door to store your luggage and have a little space. A long desk gave me plenty of room to lay out all of my makeup and the shelf under the window served to store all of our food and electronics.
The room was very clean and everything felt new. The TV was a modern flat screen and there was an Ethernet connection. For the wireless connection you must go to the downstairs lobby.
The bathroom was surprisingly spacious – I’m not talking real space, but spacious for a budget hotel. There was a full size bath and I loved that there was a retractable clothes line for you to dry out your laundry.
Instant coffee and tea were included in the room price and I was surprised by the selection of teas. They had peppermint, green, chamomile, black and gray tea. I’m a big tea drinker so I was very happy with the tea and electric kettle.
The location is perfect! The Mercure is located in the heart of downtown just a couple blocks from the harbor. There are a variety of restaurant nearby or you can easily take an elevator to the Vertigo Restaurant located on the top floor. Actually the Vertigo Restaturant is another great thing about staying at the Mercure, as the views from the restaurant are amazing. Our view from the room was pretty good too.
I would be sure to request a non-smoking floor though. They may tell you that every room is non-smoking, but the hotel used to include smoking rooms and the halls still hold the smell. We ended up on the smoking floor, luckily the room smelt fresh.
If you are looking to save a little money, but don’t want to slum it in a backpackers hotel I highly recommend the Mercure Auckland hotel. Don’t get it confused with the Mercure Windsor. It was only a block away, but I can’t say if it was nice or not.
