We stayed at the Ibis Hotel in Ellerslie when we were hunting for a car. This isn’t a typical location for tourist, but ideal if you are car shopping in Auckland. The hotel is next door to the grounds where Auckland holds its monthly car fair and very close to Great South Road, the street with a dozen car lots.
The car fair, the Auckland Car Market, is just a chance for any car owner to stick a price tag in the window and sell their car. It is like walking around a used car lot without the annoying salesmen. You get to negotiate with the actual owner of the car. It is a great way to look for a car.
The hotel is very nice! I thought we had lucked out by staying at the Mercure in downtown Auckland and I didn’t expect that luck to last. We found a special and paid less than $50 a night to stay at the Ibis Ellerslie Hotel. The price included breakfast! Paul assured me that it was a full breakfast, but I still just expected a few stale bagels.
The breakfast at Ibis Ellerslie is delicious! They had a massive buffet with everything you could want in a breakfast. They had a little bit for every culture, bacon and eggs, a noodle bar, fruit and yogurt, and all the pastries you could imagine. When I’m traveling I eat a huge breakfast. I like to have a substantial meal early so I don’t have to worry about finding a snack before lunch and I can see as many things as possible before a late lunch.
My favorite thing on the Ibis buffet was the eggs Benedict. The hollandaise sauce was rich and creamy and the English Muffin was fresh and soft. I really liked that they had a selection of cut meats and cheeses so I could make a small sandwich with the toast. So many people have told me I eat breakfast like lunch, but I don’t care. I love a big breakfast.
The room was spacious and everything was very modern. I do wish there was more counter space available, but it still had more than many budget hotels. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the price I wouldn’t call this a budget hotel. They had a lovely bar and nice dining area which I associate with a decent hotel.
The bathroom was small, but very clean. It was an interesting efficiently designed bathroom. It looked like something I would expect to see in Japan, with curved outer wall and standing shower. Thankfully the shower door was glass, so it made the bathroom appear less cramped than it really was.
If you have a car and are looking to stay outside of the city I highly recommend this hotel. It was very clean, there was plenty of parking and everything passed my expectations.
One hint – the cleaning ladies only carry a couple types of tea, if you want peppermint or something specific pick it up at the breakfast buffet.
